Phrase of the day: Bienvenidos a Ecuador… Welcome to Ecuador
(Don’t mind the spelling, especially the words in Spanish!)
I am in Quito and everything is a-okay. We have been busy with paperwork and lots of tutorials at the PC main office here. It somewhat reminds me of college… pretty hard to stay awake throughout ;) Not to mention the elevation… we are at 8500 feet, and our lungs are still adjusting. Maybe some push-ups beginning tomorrow though!
Our hostel is really nice. It has a courtyard and a room with a pool table. Only 6 balls, but that’s better than none! All of the 27 Youth and Family trainees are staying here as well. (We are all “trainees” until we complete our 3 months of language and cultural training; only then will we be “volunteers”). All of the trainees are nice, and I am sharing a room with three other guys.
They have been feeding us well. No comment on the food… it’s really unfair though because you all cook so well!… all of the other volunteers do love it. At our hostel we have been eating toast with jam, eggs, cheese, and juice in the mornings… and rice, a vegetable, and chicken or fish in the evenings. That’s right, I had to eat fish already! It was just a breaded fillet though… so somewhat like chicken, right? False. But everyone thought it was the best meal ever.
Oh! At the headquarters we had a very nice welcome lunch the first day… they sure do love plantains here. Just a heads up for when you visit :)
Hopefully more stories in the next post and less boring information about my day.
Hope all is ridiculous (in a great way) back home!
Hey cousin! So much for my illusions about the hardships of the Peace Corps building character in young volunteers! Sounds like you're living in the lap of luxury down there, except of course having to adjust your routine to getting up at the crack of dawn - yikes. Enjoy - everything!! Hugs from Paris.
